In January, Fortuna Elementary School District partnered with Optical Academy’s innovative program, Glasses2Classes, to bring free vision care directly to students across all four of its school sites.
Through this program, every student present at school on those days received a free eye exam conducted by Optical Academy’s mobile vision care team. The screenings addressed a critical issue: One in four students nationwide cannot see clearly in the classroom, impacting their ability to learn and thrive academically. At Fortuna Elementary School District, the results revealed that 20 percent (more than 200 students) of the student population tested qualified for free glasses, which were provided on-site.
“As community schools coordinator, I’m thrilled that we could provide this invaluable service to our students and their families free of charge because it had been paid for through the Community Schools’ grant at a very reasonable cost,” said Tim Grimmett, the Fortuna Elementary School District coordinator of community schools, climate, culture and assessment. “Improving students’ vision should directly impact their ability to succeed in the classroom and in life,” he added.
Optical Academy’s Glasses2Classes program is designed to ensure that students have the vision care they need without the challenges of accessing off-site appointments. The program provides onsite vision screenings, comprehensive eye exams, and high-quality eyewear for students. By addressing undiagnosed or untreated vision issues, the program helps students perform better in school and reach their full potential.
The Glasses2Classes initiative is part of Fortuna Elementary School District’s broader commitment to providing equitable and accessible resources for students. By hosting this program at all four school sites, the district removed obstacles that often prevent families from seeking vision care, ensuring that every student has an opportunity to have their needs met.
