ACSA’s endorsed legislative candidates had a strong showing in the June 2 primary election, with all 11 ACSA-supported candidates advancing to the November general election. Their success underscores the importance of ACSA’s continued engagement in legislative races.
Legislative races matter because state lawmakers make decisions that shape school funding, curriculum, student supports, and broader policies that impact the day-to-day experiences of students and educators. Ensuring that public education has strong, informed champions in the Legislature is a core part of ACSA’s advocacy work.
ACSA’s endorsement is not given lightly. Each candidate goes through a rigorous process led by ACSA’s Vice Presidents for Legislative Action and the Governmental Relations team. Endorsed candidates are evaluated based on their track records, demonstrated commitment to supporting local schools, and alignment with ACSA’s values and priorities.
“What happens in the State Capitol is felt in classrooms and school sites across California. That is why ACSA is committed to engaging in legislative races and helping elect leaders who are prepared to make informed, student-centered decisions,” said Iván Carrillo, ACSA senior director of Policy and Governmental Relations. “ACSA’s endorsements reflect our confidence that these candidates will prioritize students, listen to school leaders and keep public education at the center of their work while in the legislature.”
Under California’s top-two primary system, the two candidates receiving the most votes in each race advance to the general election, regardless of political party preference. With the Nov. 3 general election ahead, ACSA will continue to support its endorsed candidates and will also examine other legislative races for potential endorsement. A current list of ACSA-endorsed legislative candidates is available at acsa.org/endorsements.
