The ACSA Board of Directors has unanimously voted to endorse California State Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi for State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
“Throughout my career, I have worked hard to transform California’s public schools to promote the success and well-being of every student, regardless of who they are and where they live,” Muratsuchi said. “I’m proud of this endorsement because ACSA has a long history of being student-centered, and I have a deep appreciation for that commitment.”
ACSA conducted a comprehensive evaluation of all SPI candidates, including questionnaires, interviews with the board, and a thorough review of each candidate’s record.
“There were many strong candidates in this race, and we approached this decision with the seriousness it deserved,” said Dr. Daryl Camp, ACSA president and the superintendent of San Lorenzo Unified School District. “Al Muratsuchi stood out for his experience, understanding of the challenges facing our schools, and his ability to deliver results for students and educators.”
First elected to the Assembly in 2012, Muratsuchi represents Assembly District 66, which includes Torrance, Redondo Beach, Gardena and Rancho Palos Verdes. He is a community college adjunct professor, a former school board president, and previously served as chair of both the Assembly Education Committee and the Assembly Budget Committee on Education Finance.
His legislative track record reflects a sustained commitment to public schools. He has led efforts to strengthen the Local Control Funding Formula, including securing increased base funding for schools and preserving flexibility for local decision-making; authored Proposition 2, the $10 billion statewide school bond measure approved by voters in 2024; authored the California Safe Haven Schools Act to help ensure schools remain safe and welcoming for students; and advanced policies to reduce administrative burden so school leaders can stay focused on students. In recognition of his leadership, he received the ACSA Friend of Public Education Award in 2023.
As SPI, Muratsuchi says his top priorities would be to fight for good public schools in every community and every neighborhood, close opportunity and achievement gaps throughout the state, and lead the fight to increase state funding for our schools and deliver resources to students and educators.
Muratsuchi is the only SPI candidate with the combined experience of being a classroom educator, local governing school board member, and statewide education policy and budget leader, which makes him uniquely prepared to serve in this role. He is also the only candidate in the race to receive endorsements from California teachers (CFT), classified school employees (CSEA), and now school leaders.
“I’m excited about the important work ahead,” Muratsuchi said. “Students must remain at the center of every decision, and I am committed to delivering on that promise.”
The primary election will be held on June 2, 2026. If no candidate receives a majority of votes, the top two candidates with the most votes will advance to the general election Nov. 3.
