ACSA and F3 Law have produced a toolkit and associated one-pager describing best practices for adopting curriculum and instructional materials for the 2023-24 school year.
The resource is intended to give district leaders the definitions, language, guidance and references they may need as they undertake the adoption process.
Recommendations include making instructional materials available for public inspection at a district office or online, and establishing a materials review committee consisting of administrators, teachers, parents and potentially students.
The guidance also suggests that district leaders establish internal procedures for library books and address complaints regarding literature in school libraries, both informally and formally.
ACSA’s Legislative Lunch Break broadcast on Sept. 13 highlighted the toolkit and its best practices. Guests Jordy Sparks, executive director of diversity, equity and inclusion at Oceanside Unified School District, and Iyuanna Taylor, director of social/emotional learning and equity at Folsom Cordova Unified School District, discussed their own experiences adopting instructional materials and working with their school communities.
