ACSA News broadcast highlights ‘good news’
May 5, 2020
Schools may be closed, but districts and staff have found ways to go above and beyond for the students they serve. ACSA News, hosted by ACSA’s virtual storyteller Michael Kelly, has relaunched weekly broadcasts highlighting good news in California education and stories from administrators and school sites
on what they’re doing in their districts
. ACSA News’ broadcast on April 30 featured Superintendent Mary McNeil of Needles Unified School District, whose small school district serves 1,000 students. More than 75 percent of them qualify for free or reduced lunch, so McNeil has facilitated the purchase of food from Arizona to be able to provide for her students. The broadcast also featured Kyle Vallone, a junior at Tesoro High School at Capistrano Unified School District, who is working on the front lines, too. With help from Pati Romo, the district’s executive director of career technical education, he founded Operation Capo Cares to collect face shields that can be made at home on a 3D printer and distributed to medical professionals. Other stories in ACSA News’ broadcast include a virtual concert featuring school bands in Coachella Valley. Matt Howe, director of bands at Cathedral City High School, and Matt Ingleson from Desert Hot Springs High School created a website for students to download the music and perform it remotely. This week, the two teachers teamed up again for a jazz performance. If ACSA members and other school site employees have stories to share, please contact ACSA News at goodnews@acsa.org and stay tuned for more.
