Four ACSA members have entered the race to become ACSA Vice President. The position, which is a direct line to serving as ACSA President, will be voted on by region leaders and delegates during the Leadership Assembly meeting May 7 in Sacramento.
The candidates are Joe Austin (Region 18), Jonathon Brunson (Region 8), Erin Simon (Region 14), and Edward Trimis (Region 16).
Campaign videos for all four candidates will be distributed via e-mail to region delegates.

Jonathon Brunson, assistant superintendent of human relations, Milpitas USD (Region 8): Brunson has been a school administrator since 1998, serving as a principal/assistant principal for several years before joining the district office to work in HR. He has been president and VP for Legislative Action at the charter level and in Region 3. He currently serves as Region 8’s representative on the HR Council.
Erin Simon, director, Student Support Services, Long Beach USD (Region 14): Simon’s career began as a high school teacher in Los Angeles. She served as a high school dean of students and principal before taking her current role in 2014. Edward Trimis, principal, Los Angeles USD (Region 16): Trimis has been a site-level and district-level administrator in the Los Angeles area for 36 years. He served as ACSA’s Region 16 state board representative (2013-16) and on the Secondary Education Council and Urban Education Committee.
ACSA’s Policies & Procedures set strict guidelines for campaigning at select statewide events. Candidates may send promotional materials and other items to delegates and regions between the October and May leadership assemblies. They can also use other forms of communication, including mailers, emails, phone calls and Twitter messages during this period.
Campaigning shall not conflict with ACSA-sponsored activities, such as workshops, Academies and Legislative Action Day.
Articles in EdCal, Leadership, or elsewhere will not be published by candidates unless each candidate running for the same office is given an equal opportunity. Each candidate will write a 200-word position statement for inclusion in an issue of EdCal prior to the May Assembly.
Candidates will have an opportunity to address the Leadership Assembly in a three-minute speech at the Feb. 20 Leadership Assembly in Ontario and the May 7 Leadership Assembly in Sacramento.
During the May Leadership Assembly, prior to voting, ACSA will host a candidate’s dessert reception that provides an opportunity for the delegates to get to know each candidate. From their reception table, the candidate and his or her representatives, at their expense, may hand out materials promoting their candidacy. Materials will not be allowed on the Leadership Assembly floor. Neither can they be displayed anywhere else in the hotel. Candidates will be provided a randomly assigned table at the evening reception. A brief forum will be scheduled to allow the candidates to answer questions relative to the new position they are seeking. There shall be no other receptions or parties for any candidate (except at the Leadership Summit).
