Norwalk-La Mirada Adult School/Child Development Program
Erica Aguilar’s journey reflects the transformative power of education, perseverance, and a mother’s dedication to her child. Seeking better ways to support her non-verbal son with a learning disability, she enrolled in a Child Development class at Norwalk La Mirada Adult School, viewing education as an investment in both her future and his.
Under the guidance of instructor Kristy Cota, Erica gained practical strategies that helped her create meaningful learning experiences for her son, leading to noticeable growth in his communication, participation, and confidence. Inspired by these results, she completed the Child Development Certification Program and earned more than 30 units in Child Development and Early Childhood Education while maintaining straight A’s and excellent attendance. Specialized coursework in special education and behavior management further strengthened her knowledge and advocacy skills.
Today, Erica is a respected community leader, peer mentor, guest speaker, and advocate for neurodivergent students and their families. Her passion for inclusive education led to a career assisting a special education attorney, where she helps families navigate complex educational systems. Through her leadership and community involvement, Erica continues to empower others and demonstrate how education can transform lives and create lasting change.
