Adult Education: Jazzmyn Williams

Visalia Adult School
Jazzmyn Williams found hope through adult education after growing up feeling that learning was out of reach. Her childhood was marked by financial instability, frequent moves, and periods of homelessness, which led her to believe she was incapable of learning. A teacher's early criticism reinforced this belief, making her feel that school was not for her.
By the time she reached high school, her constant relocations had left her withdrawn and disengaged. At 18, she dropped out, worked in fast food, and became a young mother. The cycle of financial instability continued, but when she became a single mother of three, she decided to make a change for her family.
With support from her mother and grandmother, Jazzmyn settled in Visalia. She worked multiple low-wage jobs, eventually discovering a passion for caring for geriatric patients. After losing her caregiving job during the COVID pandemic, she chose to complete her education. She enrolled in the Visalia Adult School in 2021, starting with the Adult Basic Education (ABE) program and later transferring to the High School Diploma (HSD) program in May 2023. She completed her high school diploma in March 2024 and then joined the ABE Pre-CTE program to improve her reading comprehension for medical programs.
Jazzmyn’s success highlights Visalia Adult School’s commitment to personalized learning plans. Thanks to this tailored approach, she graduated with her high school diploma in less than a year, bypassing a longer GED track. She celebrated her achievement at a commencement ceremony on May 17 with her three children cheering her on. As the first high school graduate in her immediate family, Jazzmyn is ready to embrace her future with renewed confidence.
“I believe no matter what situation you're in, I always believe you can find your way out of it.”
