ACSA summer interns visit the state Capitol with advocates.
ACSA’s summer interns Bryan Cardona, 16, and Gabriela Jimenez, 15, visit the Capitol with ACSA Governmental Relations staff this summer. Pictured from left are Legislative Advocate Iván Carrillo, Legislative Assistant Kristy Tchamourian, Cardona, Jimenez, and Legislative Advocate Cathy McBride. Since 2015, ACSA Senior Director Margie Cuizon-Armelino facilitates a summer internship for underprivileged students with the Upward Bound Program, funded through Harvey Mudd College. “While the program is a wonderful learning opportunity for the students, it is also a great source of inspiration and motivation for us as leaders to continue our service and the fight to improve education outcomes for all students,” Cuizon-Armelino said. Cardona and Jimenez said attending a hearing at the Capitol was a memorable part of their internship. “I didn’t really know what I wanted to be or learn more about, but now because of ACSA, I’m really interested in education policy, so maybe in the future I can become an advocate,” Jimenez said.
