Contra Costa County Office of Education spotlighted its Construction Pathway program at Antioch High School in February in honor of CTE Month.
Instructor Dylan Howell teaches Construction Technology Fundamentals and Construction Technology, which allow students to learn about all of the trades that go into a construction project. Students have created benches, tables, outdoor BBQs and food shacks in these classes and learned to use different tools and machines.
Additionally, students in these classes can earn certifications that will help them land a job after high school. The curriculum is sponsored by the Construction Industry Education Foundation (the education outreach arm of the California Homebuilding Foundation) and focuses on residential home construction.
Other CTE programs in the county were also featured, including a Fire Science Class at Freedom High School where students learn the science behind fires and an AP Computer Science class at California High School where students enhance existing code for projects that imitate those at a real tech company.
