School leaders from across the nation gathered in Indianapolis this July to participate in the inaugural event of the newly envisioned National Principals Association.

Among those in attendance were representatives from ACSA — Bill Sanderson, Bonnie Munguia, and Dr. John Schilling — who joined colleagues from across the country in helping launch a renewed national organization dedicated to strengthening leadership throughout the K–12 educational continuum.

In March, the National Association of Secondary School Principals announced plans to change its name to the National Principals Association, expand membership to elementary principals, and make internal changes to better support and advocate for elementary administrators. On July 1, the changes went into effect and a new website was launched: www.principals.org.

The July event represented more than the introduction of a new organizational structure. It represented a commitment to creating a unified national community of educational leaders focused on addressing the increasing challenges facing public education and all levels of the principal position.

The new NPA builds upon the foundation of embracing a broader and more integrated K-12 approach that recognizes the interconnected nature of leadership across all grade levels. Rather than operating within separate leadership silos, the organization seeks to bring together educational leaders from elementary, middle, and high schools to foster stronger collaboration and shared administrative professional learning. This will provide ACSA members with a new national opportunity for support and advocacy at all levels.

A central theme of the conference was the importance of unity among educational leaders. Participants explored how a national network that serves administrators across the K–12 spectrum can create greater opportunities for mentorship, leadership growth, and collective problem-solving. Attendees emphasized that today’s educational challenges — ranging from student wellness and academic recovery to staffing shortages and emerging technologies — require coordinated leadership and a strong professional community.

The Indianapolis gathering also highlighted a renewed commitment to leadership development. Through keynote presentations, collaborative sessions, and networking opportunities, participants examined strategies for preparing future administrators while supporting current leaders throughout every stage of their careers. The event reinforced the belief that effective leadership remains one of the most important factors in creating positive outcomes for students and schools.

For ACSA members, participation in the launch of the new National Principals Association reflects California’s longstanding commitment to national educational K-12 leadership. By contributing to the development of a unified national organization, California administrators are helping shape a future in which school leaders have greater access to professional resources, stronger advocacy, and expanded opportunities to learn from colleagues across the country.

With leaders from California and across the nation working with 35 different state organizations together, the re-envisioned NPA is positioned to become a powerful voice for school administrators and an influential force in advancing excellence in K–12 education.
