Changes in print and online EdCal will strengthen communication with members
July 15, 2019
EdCal is starting the new school year with an upgraded digital edition that will make it easier for members to access and share education stories, as well as a new layout to the paper edition.  “We’ve reviewed the tenets of our new strategic plan and feedback from member surveys to create stronger pathways for communication,” said Naj Alikhan, Senior Director of Marketing and Communications. “Everybody consumes information differently and we want to make sure our members get the information they need in the format they are most comfortable with.”  The new digital edition of EdCal is available online at
edcal.acsa.org
, as well as through ACSA’s website and app. The digital edition is now designed specifically for the web, making EdCal easier to read on any device — mobile, tablet or desktop. With a simple, fully responsive design, readers will be able to quickly share individual articles on social media and via e-mail. “Digital publications need responsive designs and mechanisms that create a connection with readers,” said Emily Agpoon, ACSA Communications Coordinator and creator of the new digital EdCal. “Our previous digital edition wasn’t giving our readers the experience that they wanted most and we believe this new digital format will spearhead more online readership.” The print edition of EdCal has also been refreshed with a new front page layout. A new Professional Learning page will highlight ways for members to strengthen their skills and advance their careers, including a new column dedicated to ACSA professional development opportunities called High 5. A Region News section will feature photos and news from our charters and regions around the state, reflecting ACSA activities on the grassroots level. Additionally, the FYI column has moved to page two, where readers will find items pertinent to school leaders. These changes are occurring under the leadership of new EdCal Editor Michelle Carl, who joined ACSA in March. She succeeds Cary Rodda, who retired from ACSA in March after 20 years of writing and editing EdCal. “Michelle has put together a strategy for EdCal that is member-focused and meets the needs of our diverse organization,” Alikhan said. “EdCal has been around for decades and it is our strongest communication tool — Michelle is determined to continue EdCal’s legacy while creating a dynamic publication that members will enjoy reading.” Carl holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from California State University, Sacramento. She began her career as the city beat reporter at the Auburn Journal and was later promoted to Features Editor and News Editor at the daily newspaper. In 2010, she became the Managing Editor of the weekly Roseville Press Tribune. Most recently, she directed editorial content for N&R Publications, which produces advertorial publications that are inserted into newspapers across the country. Carl and her husband David have two boys, the youngest of whom will start transitional kindergarten in the fall. “I hope EdCal can be a compendium of news and ideas that keeps members connected to ACSA, their colleagues, and professional development opportunities that help them do the important work of leading schools,” Carl said. “I want to continue to evolve EdCal, so I would love to hear from members about what types of content they value and what they would like to see in future editions of EdCal.”
