Cool to be kind

February 10, 2020
Students at Rolling Hills Elementary School in Fairfield give state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond high fives during his visit Jan. 30. Thurmond visited the Fairfield-Suisun USD school to participate in the Great Kindness Challenge. Presented by Kids for Peace, a California-based global nonprofit, the week-long event encourages students to actively create a culture of compassion and respect on campus and beyond — and challenges students to complete as many acts of kindness as possible in one week. Students presented a kindness assembly and invited Thurmond to complete a few acts of kindness from the GKC checklist (“make a new friend,” “entertain someone with a happy dance,” and “give a friend a kind handshake”) before giving him a tour of their kindness-themed classrooms.
