Educators from throughout California gathered in San Diego this month to share ways to create supportive and affirming learning environments for LGBTQIA+ students and staff.
Back for its second year, ACSA’s Lead With Pride Summit drew more than 300 attendees who are committed to protecting the health and safety of LGBTQIA+ youth. Guided by the theme, “Leading with Authenticity, Purpose and Courage!” attendees heard presentations on supporting trans and nonbinary youth, inclusive books and materials, laws that protect LGBTQIA+ students and more. They also heard inspiring keynote presentations from ALOK and Michelle Meow, and gained insights from a student panel that shared authentic views on how to support LGBTQIA+ students.
Attendees said they enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere and sense of community with their fellow educators who are fighting for LGBTQIA+ students.
“It was life-changing for me to see all these wonderful people together and the supportive administrators willing to do the uncomfortable work of bringing this content back to schools,” wrote one attendee. “It felt like I was part of an environment that was loving towards all human experiences, and that is rare! It was magical and beautiful to me.”
“I am excited to put my new knowledge into action and I feel I am more ready to support those [that] want to be themselves.”
