Deer Creek celebrates its promoting students
June 29, 2020
Deer Creek Elementary School found a way to continue its unique tradition of celebrating promoting students on the last day of school, even with social distancing requirements to slow the spread of COVID-19. The Clap Out Celebration is typically held on the last day of school, where promoting students walk through the school hallways that are lined with all the other students, parents, and staff who clap, cheer, and congratulate them for their hard work and accomplishments. The school in the Nevada City School District had a larger group of students to celebrate this year than normal. The school is changing its grade span from TK-4 to TK-3 next school year and wanted to celebrate its last fourth graders and promoting third graders, who will be moving on to become the first fourth grade class at Seven Hills Middle School. Deer Creek Elementary Principal Karen Mix said staff created a festive atmosphere with music and signs. They stood six feet apart around the drive-through parking lot in front of the school to wave to students in their cars. “Everyone had a great time, and the parents were appreciative these traditions did not get forgotten or overlooked for their students,” Mix said.
