After a pandemic-caused hiatus, ACSA’s Equity Institute will make its comeback in Pasadena this spring with a focus on making high-quality public education accessible for all California students.
Principals, teachers, parent leaders, counselors and central office administrators are just a few of the school leader roles that will benefit from the array of invigorating sessions planned at Equity Institute. “Mobilizing, Creating and Connecting” is the guiding theme for this year’s event, which is especially relevant today after two years of a pandemic that isolated school leaders and students.
Attendees can expect to dive into sessions on timely issues such as leadership for racial equity, eliminating systemic barriers in urban school districts, anti-racist education and diversifying school texts. A networking reception provides a coda to the first day, allowing attendees to meet with their peers and discuss new ideas and strategies they just learned.
Principals, teachers, parent leaders, counselors and central office administrators are just a few of the school leader roles that will benefit.
Headlining Equity Institute are two keynote speakers whose experiences in education will inspire attendees to rethink the way they teach and think. Dr. Renetta Garrison Tull is UC Davis’ first chancellor of diversity, equity and inclusion, a new position for the university. She’s a champion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and its accessibility, with experience in education policy and strategy.
With Dr. Tull as a STEM leader, Equity Institute has also brought on a keynote to represent the arts. Tyson Amir is a Bay Area-based rapper, poet, emcee, author and freedom fighter who embeds his art and Black history into education for Black students. He promotes humanity and justice while promoting the teaching of history in all its nuances.
A panel of county superintendents will address the Equity Institute crowd to discuss their own challenges and successes when it comes to implementing equity strategies in their schools. This is a must-see session for school leaders hoping to hear actionable steps to take to improve the educational outcomes of all students.
This year’s Equity Institute will take place at Hilton Pasadena, located near Old Town Pasadena, which is famous for shopping, sight-seeing and entertainment. Coupled with the temperate Southern California spring, this conference and its surroundings are sure to rejuvenate attendees while providing quality professional development.
