School leaders are tasked with ensuring each and every student in California schools can experience the transformative power of education.
ACSA’s Equity Institute will give these leaders a chance to come together and deepen their explorations in the pursuit of educational equity.
“Equity as a practice provides an educational system with a safety net for each student,” said Kimberly Hendricks-Brown, Ed.D., chair of this year’s Equity Institute Planning Committee and a principal on special assignment in Fresno Unified School District. “Like the Leadership Summit, the Equity Institute will also focus on equity and creating school and classroom environments where all students can learn and succeed.”
This conference is specifically designed for site and district teams, giving principals, teachers, parent leaders, counselors and central office administrators a unique opportunity to learn and work together on pathways that will improve outcomes for their students.
Participants will engage directly with experts in the field to build on the existing work already happening throughout the state and to challenge and inspire while providing the tools needed to create innovative, inclusive and equitable pathways to learning.
Hendricks-Brown said some of the trends that will be reflected in the conference are the need to use data as the basis for Local Control & Accountability Plan, goals, actions and funding; cultivating safe spaces for LGBTQ+, English learners and African American students; and ensuring that all departments utilize equity as their base. Other topics include community schools, social-emotional practices, early learning to college pathways and culturally responsive classroom practices.
Attendees will also enjoy networking opportunities and a reception, giving them the opportunity to build their equity community and support system.
“We need ‘equity warriors’ who believe and act with urgency.”
— Kimberly Hendricks-Brown, Equity Institute Planning Committee Chair
Last year, more than 250 educators gathered to share and learn strategies for change in schools.
“I enjoyed the networking and learning about what other districts are doing for equity in their areas and what I may be able to do here,” said one attendee from 2022.
“Most every session helped me to refine my language and skills in work through DEI with our schools,” said another attendee of last year’s event, which was held in Pasadena.
Those who come to the 2023 Equity Institute will be able to relax and recharge at The Meritage Resort in the beautiful Napa Valley.
Hendricks-Brown invites all champions for equity to come together in Napa for this unparalleled learning experience.
“I am looking forward to learning with peers who have like minds,” she said. “Guaranteeing that county offices, districts, and schools have equitable policies, practices, procedures and people is tough work; we need ‘equity warriors’ who believe and act with urgency.”
