12th grade, Walt Whitman High, Los Angeles USD
Jay Martinez is making the most of his second chance at life. When he was 5 years old, Jay was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a highly aggressive cancer. Jay’s childhood was shaped by chemotherapy and radiation, forcing him to mature faster than most of his classmates. He emerged cancer-free with a profound zest for life and a determination to seize every opportunity. His time at Walt Whitman Continuation High School was transformational, showing him that he could not only reach for the stars but surpass them. In the fall, Jay plans to attend Los Angeles Trade Technical College and pursue a career as an electrician.
“I feel like just because something bad happened in your story doesn’t mean that your story can’t end good.”
