12th grade, Gilroy High, Gilroy Unified School District
Johnathan Spencer lives each day with a joy that’s hard to miss. He lives with Niemann-Pick Type C, a progressive, life-threatening, rare disease that slowly damages the brain and other organs, making things like walking, talking and thinking harder over time. But Johnathan refuses to let that stop him. His positive attitude and bright spirit lift everyone around him. He focuses on what he can do, enjoying every moment with family and friends. Despite the challenges ahead, Johnathan embraces life with a smile, showing strength and gratitude every day and reminding others to find joy in even the toughest moments.
“I wake up every morning happy. My life’s too short to not be happy.”
