12th grade, Everett Alvarez High School, Salinas Unified High School District
Alpha Wong should not be here. By every expectation, his story should have ended in fourth grade, beneath the wheels of an SUV that crushed his spine and left him paralyzed from the chest down. Instead, he kept going. Through months of rehab, through the quiet work of rebuilding, through the sadness that followed, he found purpose in wheelchair basketball. The game became his escape and his proving ground. At Everett Alvarez High School, Alpha turned that same determination into a 4.4 GPA, student body leadership, and advocacy for others. He graduated in May and will attend University of California, Berkeley this fall to study computer engineering.
“I want other people to know that any major setback in life is not the end of your story. It’s merely the beginning of your story.”
2026 Every Student Succeeding Region 10 Alpha Wong showed strength and resilience after a car accident left him paralyzed from the chest down.
