12th grade, San Marcos High School, San Marcos USD

For Eduardo Gomez, losing his father meant losing the person who had always been there, on the soccer pitch and everywhere else. Suddenly, he was left wondering what life would look like without him. Soccer became more than a game. It gave Eduardo a place to carry grief he did not always know how to explain. At San Marcos High School, he maintained a 3.5 GPA while becoming a soccer captain and student leader. Through it all, he rarely stopped to measure his progress. Now, Eduardo can see what those small victories have become: proof of how far he has come.
“I’ve always struggled with being proud of myself. But now, as I’m growing older, I’m realizing these small victories are slowly building into something greater. I’m very proud of who I am.”
