Name: Alejandro Flores Award: Business Services Administrator of the Year Title: Deputy Superintendent of Administrative Services, Rowland Unified School District ACSA highlights: Member since 2006; served as charter leader of Association of Rowland Administrators
Alejandro “Alex” Flores doesn’t hide behind a desk — first and foremost, he prioritizes spending time on school grounds, immersing himself in the community to ensure that he makes the best funding decisions he can.
Flores listens and learns from educators, parents and students alike; his hands-on involvement helps him align financial, facilities and safety resources with educational programs and goals of academic and student success. His leadership of Rowland Unified School District’s Building Services Department exemplifies his work ethic and values — the team emphasized customer service as they revitalized school facilities.
Some of Flores’ other achievements include improving internet connection and safeguards for data and privacy. He also focused on providing training for school staff on safety protocols by building a district-wide safety team and making sure the team members developed positive relationships with students.
Rowland Unified’s Board of Education President David Malkin praised Flores’ handling of the Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee and his leadership in bringing electric school buses to the district.
“Having a leader in Business Services (who) is forward-thinking, innovative, empowers staff and maximizes funding sources to enhance student learning spaces and staff working experiences has been a source of pride for the Board of Education,” Malkin wrote.
What’s your favorite book or quote on leadership? One of my favorite quotes is from Simon Sinek: “Leadership is not about being in charge. It’s about taking care of those in your charge.” This resonates with me because leadership in administrative services is about serving others and ensuring that the systems and structures we create empower students, staff and the community to succeed.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? The best advice I’ve ever received is to lead with empathy and listen more than you speak. Understanding the needs, concerns and aspirations of those around you helps build trust and fosters a strong, collaborative environment.
What would people be surprised to learn about you? People might be surprised to learn that I love to unwind by cycling. It helps me clear my mind, and I find that some of my best ideas and reflections come while being out on the road.
What are some life hacks that you would recommend for a new administrator? Master the art of delegation — trust your team to carry out responsibilities and give them the autonomy to shine.
Use time-blocking techniques — dedicating focused time to key tasks minimizes distractions and boosts productivity. Prioritize relationships — whether with staff, students, or community members, building trust and rapport is vital for long-term success. Stay ahead on paperwork and compliance — keeping these areas up to date prevents last-minute stress and ensures smooth operations.
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve overcome to get where you are? One of the biggest challenges has been adapting to the evolving demands of education while staying true to the values that drive me. Whether it’s managing complex budgets or navigating policy changes, maintaining a student-centered focus amidst administrative pressures has been key to overcoming these challenges.
What are you most proud of accomplishing? In my role as deputy superintendent, administrative services, I’m most proud of being part of a team that has transformed our district’s operational efficiency, which directly impacted student success. From streamlining processes to improving support for teachers, our work behind the scenes ensures that educators can focus on what matters most—teaching and learning.
How has ACSA supported you in your career/current position? ACSA has provided an incredible platform for professional development, networking and mentorship. Their workshops and resources have helped me grow as a leader, while the support from fellow administrators has been invaluable in navigating challenges and finding solutions. ACSA’s commitment to leadership excellence has played a significant role in my career.
