Flying the Flag of Progress
June 28, 2021
Students at Pajaro Valley Unified School District raise the rainbow flag for the first time on May 21 in hon-or of Harvey Milk Day.
The flag also flew over the district office throughout the month of June for LGBTQ+ Pride Month. In February, PVUSD’s board approved a resolution to fly the rainbow flag, stating that “education regarding LGBTQ+ issues increases understanding and cultivates respect for LGBTQ+ students and cultivates a culture of allyship.”
The resolution also cites that policies that specifically mention sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression can make students feel safer and lead to fewer incidents of bullying and harassment. The flag will also be raised in October in recognition of LGBTQ+ History Month and National Coming Out Day on Oct. 11.
