State Sen. Anna Caballero, D-Merced, recently toured Fresno Unified School District’s central kitchen production center.

Caballero, Fresno Unified leaders and Nutrition Services Director Amanda Harvey discussed the school meal program and sampled offerings from the school lunch menu, including chicken posole with local organic chicken, turkey gravy with local organic turkey, vegetarian chana masala, local fruits, vegetables and milk.

During the tour, Caballero also presented a resolution to Fresno Unified’s Nutrition Services team in recognition of their Modeling School Food Systems Change Award from the Center for Ecoliteracy. The resolution highlights the district’s achievements in serving more freshly prepared and locally grown school meals and providing nutrition education to students.

Fresno Unified employs 125 Nutrition Services staff at the central kitchen production center, where more than 63,000 meals are prepared daily. Additionally, Fresno Unified employs more than 300 staff at school sites to prepare and serve meals daily.

“We are extremely proud of our Nutrition Services team for the work they have done to incorporate more locally grown fruits and vegetables in school meals and their dedication to serving delicious, healthy meals to our students,” said Interim Superintendent Misty Her.
