‘His legacy is not going to end’
February 10, 2025
Mental health isn’t just a cause for ACSA President Rafael Plascencia — it’s his life’s mission.
In 2022, Plascencia’s older brother and fellow ACSA member, Moises Plascencia, died by suicide on the campus where he served as assistant principal. Moises was not only a beloved sibling but also a trusted mentor who shaped Rafael’s life from an early age.
In the years since Moises’ passing, Rafael has channeled his grief into a steadfast commitment to prioritize mental health for school leaders.
In his first interview since this profound loss, Rafael sat down with ACSA’s Michael Kelly to discuss how Moises’ legacy continues to inspire his advocacy for educators and his relentless fight against the stigma surrounding mental health.
“I think his legacy is not going to end,” Rafael said. “It’s going to live on. And as long as folks are providing service and mental health to people, his legacy will continue. And I think that’s one of the things that brings me joy is that so much good has come out of it.”
