Around 75 school leaders from across the country visited Oceanside Unified School District in October to talk about how to better support the mental health needs of students.
AASA, The School Superintendents Association, in partnership with the Cook Center for Human Connection and The Jed Foundation, hosted the AASA Mental Health Cohort fall meeting, October 19-21, at the Oceanside Unified School District.
The group gathered to explore the latest data, research and trends around the mental health needs of students and school communities across the country.
Attendees also discussed wellness strategies and participated in action-oriented group activities to ensure they walked away with next steps to bring back to their home districts.
“We are honored to serve as host site ... and share key strategies that have provided a solid foundation for the comfort and prosperity of our school system.”
Julie Vitale, Superintendent of Oceanside USD
“The Oceanside Unified School District is dedicated to providing meaningful mental health supports to parents, guardians, caregivers and, most importantly, the students in our learning community,” said Julie Vitale, superintendent of Oceanside USD. “There has never been a time when proactive and purposeful support to our district’s stakeholders has been more important. We are honored to serve as host site for AASA’s Mental Health Cohort and share key strategies that have provided a solid foundation for the comfort and prosperity of our school system.”
The critical discussions attendees focused on throughout the three-day meeting included:
  • What are the most common mental health needs of students and how can these needs be effectively addressed in the school setting?
  • What are leaders doing to build bridges between families, schools and communities to meet the growing number of mental health needs?
  • What resources are innovative and available to meet the mental health needs of students and staff?
