Learning and some bitmoji fun at Principals Academy
April 19, 2021
This year, ACSA has responded to the continued need for professional development and continuous learning amidst the pandemic by launching all of its Academies in a virtual environment. In spite of feeling thrust into a whole new paradigm, ACSA Academies directors and presenters met the challenge head on to provide the same high-quality instruction, interaction and networking connections to more than 750 participants across the state, far exceeding the initial enrollment expectations.
The Rancho Cucamonga Principals Academy opened with 32 percent more enrollments than the 25 that were planned. They completed the eight-weekend academy with their first-ever virtual graduation. In lieu of the traditional group photo on the final day, the group embraced the new environment and took a bitmoji photo to commemorate the event.

This year also marked the addition of two new sessions: Social Emotional Learning in the K-12 System and Communications, Community Engagement and Public Relations, both in response to the changing needs of site principals.
“There is a deep sense of satisfaction in knowing that you are sowing into the lives of others who will then be impacting multitudes of administrators that lead and inspire teachers who in turn shape a generation and more,” said Academy Director Derrick Lawson.
The participants conveyed the impact of this Academy by sharing thoughts. “The ACSA Principals Academy refined my leadership skills and brought all the components of being a principal together for me,” said Sarah Guillen, new principal of SmithTech Academy in Yucaipa-Calimesa JUSD.
“I’ve learned that a principal needs to be a flexible multi-tasker and a lifelong learner. Thank you so much! I feel like I’ve grown in my leadership,” said Khaleelah Lewis-Wilkins, assistant principal in Moreno Valley Unified.
