In a thriving community like Oakley, Calif., fostering literacy and strengthening community ties is a noble aspiration and a shared commitment embraced by multiple agencies. United in purpose and vision, Oakley Union Elementary School District, Rotary Club of Oakley, Contra Costa County Office of Education and the City of Oakley have embarked on an inspiring initiative to promote literacy through the establishment of “little libraries” across multiple neighborhoods in the community. This collaborative effort represents a powerful example of community-driven action, aiming to enhance access to reading materials, cultivate a love for reading and foster a sense of belonging within the community.
“Strong schools are built on a foundation of strong community partnerships. The Oakley Little Libraries project signifies everything we hope to achieve with our community,” said OUESD Superintendent Jeff Palmquist, highlighting the united purpose of these four entities. “Bringing together the City of Oakley, the Contra Costa County Office of Education, the Rotary Club of Oakley and the Oakley Union Elementary School District, we want all our students to read at (or above) proficiency by third grade and feel a sense of belonging and connection to their schools and their community.”

The Rotary Club of Oakley, known for its unwavering commitment to community welfare and literacy, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing its dedication to fostering a sense of unity and promoting literacy across generations. A representative from the club stated, “What the Rotary Club of Oakley wants to do for Oakley residents is to build community and promote literacy for all generations.” This sentiment underscores the initiative’s essence: to cultivate literacy skills and a deep sense of belonging among Oakley’s residents, particularly its youth.
What do these little libraries bring to our community?
Accessibility to literature: This accessibility is crucial for fostering a love for reading and lifelong learning among community members. Each miniature library is a gateway to new worlds, allowing residents of all ages to explore diverse literary works and expand their horizons.
Promotion of literacy: By providing easy access to books, the little libraries initiative promotes literacy fun and engagement. Children and adults are encouraged to explore the diverse range of books available in these libraries, improving their literacy skills and expanding their knowledge base.
Community interaction and engagement: Little libraries serve as focal points for community interaction and engagement. They provide opportunities for neighbors to come together, share recommendations and discuss their favorite books. By fostering a culture of reading and sharing, these tiny structures can strengthen community bonds and promote a sense of belonging among residents.
Partnership and collaboration: The cooperation among the agencies exemplifies the power of collaboration in achieving common goals. By combining resources, expertise and shared vision, the four organizations have been able to significantly impact literacy levels and community engagement in Oakley.

Neighborhood revitalization: Little libraries play a dual role in promoting literacy and acting as catalysts for neighborhood revitalization. By enhancing the aesthetic appeal of communities and drawing foot traffic, these small structures actively contribute to the beautification and renewal of the local area.
Long-term impact: As these partnerships continue to flourish, the long-term impact of the Oakley Little Libraries initiative is expected to be significant. Plans to expand the network further indicate a commitment to building a more literate and connected community where every individual has access to and experiences the power of reading.
With each page turned and each story shared, Oakley’s Little Libraries stand as enduring symbols of hope, unity and the boundless potential within a community united by the love of reading. As the project continues to evolve, its impact will reverberate far beyond the confines of its neighborhoods, inspiring communities everywhere to embrace the transformative power of literacy and collective action. With the 10 little book hubs around Oakley, we look forward to installing more miniature libraries as we continue to advocate for literacy and a sense of community, one book at a time.
