Members commit to PD at ACSA’s conferences

When people ask, “What does ACSA do?” I explain that ACSA benefits California’s students by supporting, advocating for, and developing California’s educational leaders. Regarding leadership development, we continuously look for ways to make our professional development more meaningful and more accessible. In fact, eight of the 15 strategic plan milestones we are engaging this year are in the areas of Leadership Development and Professional Development.  Besides the conferences, academies, workshops, networks and professional coaching (all of which can be found on our website at acsa.org/ProfessionalLearning), ACSA is working diligently to digitize our learning content and develop an online learning platform that will allow our members to learn and network where and when it is convenient for them. To this end, ACSA recently hired Janaye Field to serve as our Online Learning Executive. Speaking of conferences, we recently concluded what feels to staff like a six-week conference. Our “conference season” begins in late January with the Negotiators’ Symposium, followed by our Superintendents’ Symposium and the Every Child Counts Symposium, and concludes with our Classified Educational Leaders Institute.  Each conference is planned by our members and supported by all ACSA departments. At every conference, I marvel at the quality of the professional development and the commitment of our members. Our members have very challenging, time-consuming day jobs, yet they find time to help develop and support their peers. ACSA members are truly inspiring. For the second time, the Superintendents’ Symposium was held in Indian Wells at the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa. The theme of the symposium was “Courageous Leadership.” Planning chair Michael McCormick and his planning committee put together a powerful program.  We heard from some of you that traveling to Indian Wells is challenging for superintendents in northern California. We have also heard for years that traveling to Monterey is challenging for our southern California superintendents. When we surveyed superintendents three years ago, respondents overwhelmingly supported alternating the event in northern and southern California. Now that we have been in Indian Wells a couple of times, we want to survey superintendents again. This is your event and we want the location and content to meet your needs. Please encourage your colleagues to complete the survey when they receive it so we get representative voices from the field. For the first time, the Every Child Counts Symposium was held in Palm Desert at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa. Dr. Jean Martin and her planning committee brought in top notch presenters in support of their theme “Transforming Schools into an Oasis of Hope.” The symposium was very well attended and many attendees said it was the best ECC to date. While the doughnut wall may have helped, the positive surveys spoke more to the venue, space and content. Again, I am fortunate to work with amazing staff members at ACSA who help develop California’s educational leaders, and I am blessed to work for so many dedicated leaders who volunteer to make a difference in the lives and careers of their colleagues.
