Nichols knows importance of celebrating success
June 15, 2020
When the California School Dashboard data were released recently, Principal Margaret Nichols wanted to make sure everyone at her school received credit for the improved results. Naturally, she surprised her staff with a “Nacho” Average Staff party, complete with nacho bar and mariachis.  This is just one example of the positive school culture Nichols has developed at Kerman Middle School. Responsive to the needs of her students, Nichols has implemented several academic programs and tutoring opportunities for students who struggle. She has also added a counselor and campus liaison to support the emotional needs of students as part of her “think outside the box” approach to behavior.  Students know that they can find support — and kudos — from anyone on staff, including their principal. “Detailed, diplomatic, organized, dedicated, knowledgeable and collaborative are just a few qualities that are displayed by Ms. Nichols,” said Efrain Guizar, content coordinator for Fresno CTE/ROP. “Ms. Nichols demonstrates the highest quality of professionalism and commitment to student achievement.” What’s your favorite book on leadership?  I have several: “It Worked for Me,” by Colin Powell; “What Great Principals Do Differently,” by Todd Whitaker; and “Dare to Lead,” by Brené Brown. What’s your favorite quote about leadership?  I have many favorite quotes, but at this moment in time, it is: “Across any organization, the culture and how the team responds and reacts is a reflection of who’s at the top.” — Mitt Romney What are some of your favorite apps?  I don’t use a lot of apps for school, however, I do belong to many groups on social media where administrators share ideas, struggles, resources and experiences. Who better to learn from than other administrators who are walking the same path as you are? What’s your best strategy for work/life balance?  Cultivate relationships with family and friends — they will be there long after your career is over, and find a hobby that allows you to rest, relax and recharge. What are the top five life hacks that you would recommend for a new administrator?  1. Find comfortable shoes and get them in every color.  2. Invest time in your people — students, staff, parents, community.  3. Treat every student the way you would want your own children treated.  4. Find a mentor, someone you admire and trust, and learn all you can from them.  5. Make connections with students, and let them know you care. What made you want to become a school administrator?  After 14 years in the classroom and five years as a literacy coach, I wanted to grow and challenge myself. I love being a student, and was excited to go back to school to get my administrative credential. On my first day as a high school assistant principal, I knew I’d made the right decision. What’s the biggest challenge you’ve overcome to get where you are?  It was a challenge to go from leading a class of 30 elementary students to leading a staff of 75 adults. Every day presents a new challenge, and I take each as a learning opportunity. What is your proudest accomplishment?  Personally, I’m most proud of raising my two sons, mostly as a single parent. Professionally, I’m most proud of working my way up through the trenches into administration and helping others realize their dreams. Who is someone who inspires you?  My dad has always been my inspiration. He modeled for me that hard work, integrity, and the way you care about people are the keys to success. He passed away 13 years ago, but I strive every day to be more like him. What’s your pre-game ritual to get ready for a big meeting or presentation?  I always prepare way ahead of time so I’m not rushed. I think through how I’d like it to go and the desired outcome. I make the environment inviting and provide snacks — a little extra time and effort let people know you appreciate them and their time. What was the best ACSA event you’ve attended?  The New & Aspiring Principal’s Institute at UCLA. How has ACSA supported you in your career/current position?  What I enjoy most about ACSA is my local charter. I have made many great friends from schools all over our county who I can call upon and network with. Our meetings are very informative, and it is a great way to find out what other local schools are doing. I appreciate them all so much — shout out to Region 9, Fresno County Charter! What has the impact of the COVID-19 worldwide health crisis taught you/how has it inspired you as an educator?  As a person, it has taught me to live a little more simply, to appreciate the blessings — family, home, job — and to rediscover some hobbies I’ve put aside like gardening, crochet and reading. As an educator, I’ve been inspired by my staff and colleagues to think outside the box and use technology more creatively.
