The Oceanside Unified School District Board of Trustees, district staff and the North County LGBTQ Resource Center raised the pride flag over the district office in honor of LGBTQ+ Pride Month in June.
Trustees were joined by staff and students from the Gay-Straight Alliance. “As a proud parent and a school board trustee, I am honored to be a part of this pride flag raising,” said Oceanside USD Board of Education Member Stacy Begin, Ed.D. “This is our way of telling students, staff and our community that we embrace diversity and support all people in being who they are.”
This is the second year that the pride flag will fly over the district office. Last year trustees adopted a resolution directing the superintendent and all district staff to continue supporting lessons, activities and conversations that engage students in learning, research and writing about LGBTQ+ students and families.
“Raising this flag for Pride Month signals to our students and staff that everyone is welcome,” said Oceanside Unified School District Superintendent Julie Vitale, Ph.D. “Everyone deserves to know they are safe to come as they are, this is just one way we can stand together to remind the LGBTQ+ community of this.”
During the month of June, Oceanside Unified School District’s new logo will reflect the Progessive Pride flag across all of their social media platforms, using the handle @OsideUSD.
