Olmos appointed to SBE charter advisory commission

ACSA member Steve Olmos, Ed.D., was recently appointed to the State Board of Education Advisory Commission on Charter Schools for a two-year term beginning Jan. 1.
Comprised of nine members, the ACCS guides the SBE on all aspects of its duties under the Charter Schools Act of 1992. These members assist the SBE with ensuring that charter schools realize higher student achievement within a context of sound educational programs and practices, proper financial management, and other specific requirements of law.
For the past year, Olmos has served as superintendent for Visions In Education, an online high school and TK-8 home school provider.
His varied educational experience includes district, county office of education and charter experience, making him uniquely qualified to serve on the State Board of Education’s Advisory Commission on Charter Schools.
Olmos began his educational career as a K-3 child guidance aide, and for the nearly 30 years since, has dedicated his life to pursuing equitable educational outcomes for all children.

Olmos has served at all levels in the system, including roles as a high school English language development teacher, a principal in the Torrance Unified School District, superintendent of the Willows Unified School District, and assistant superintendent at the Butte County Office of Education and the Santa Clara County Office of Education.
An ACSA member for more than 20 years, Olmos has completed numerous professional development trainings and certifications, including ACSA Leading the Leaders and ACSA Leadership Coaching.
With a background in student services and support, Olmos has been recognized among peers for his expertise in serving California’s diverse student population. He was chair of the California County Superintendents’ statewide Student Programs and Services Steering Committee and was recognized as ACSA’s Glenn County Charter Administrator of the Year in 2009.
Olmos earned a Bachelor of Arts from CSU Chico, a Master of Science in administration from Pepperdine University and a Doctorate of Education in educational leadership from USC Rossier School of Education.
Olmos will serve as the ACCS parent member and as demonstrated with his recent tenure as superintendent of Visions In Education, he will promote a balanced perspective that draws upon his diverse educational background.
