C.J. Morris Elementary fifth-grade teacher Rachel Harrington transformed her class recently for a Harry Potter-themed chemistry lesson. During Snape’s Potion Lab, student investigators made observations and determined if a physical or chemical change occurred.
Small groups rotated through stations containing cleverly named ingredients such as Bouncing Spider Juice (vegetable oil), Moon Seeds (Alka Seltzer tablets), and Bat’s Blood (water with red food coloring) to ramp up the excitement.
At the beginning of the year, students told their teacher they felt science was boring.
“Being that they were doing distance learning for so long, I could understand why they felt that way,” said Harrington, whose school is in the Walnut Valley USD. “We’ve performed so many experiments that I hope I’ve changed their minds!”
