R18: Retired charter hosts MLB executive Strasberg
ACSA’s Region 18 Retired Charter (ACSAR) held its first new academic year luncheon on Aug. 13.
The guest speaker was Andy Strasberg, historian, author, storyteller, and baseball executive with the San Diego Padres for over 22 years.
Strasberg shared his unique story about his friendship with baseball great Roger Maris that began when he was a teenager. His presentation was engaging and ACSA members thoroughly enjoyed his storytelling.
As a special treat, Strasberg brought one of Maris’ baseball bats and invited ACSA members to pose for a picture holding the bat used by Maris, the three-time World Series champ who made history in 1961 by surpassing Babe Ruth to hit 61 homeruns in a single season while playing on the New York Yankees.
“Being able to hold Roger Maris’ bat was quite a thrill for me,” said Robert Graeff. “Even though I was born and raised in San Diego, I grew up an avid baseball fan with the NY Yankees being my favorite team. I have clear memories of the year Roger Maris hit 61 home runs in 1961.”
