R5: Region leaders hold retreat in Half Moon Bay
Region 5 held its annual leadership retreat at the Oceano Hotel and Spa in Half Moon Bay on April 29 and 30. Region leaders were able to share their stories as well as review their roles and responsibilities.
In addition, they developed the 2022-23 region meeting schedule and activities, which will include a planned joint activity with Region 6 and Region 8 in spring 2023.

Leaders from Region 5 participated in an annual retreat April 29 and 30 in Half Moon Bay.
R11: Founding members join awards luncheon
In celebration of ACSA’s 50th anniversary, Region 11 invited founding members to join them at their 2022 Awards Luncheon, held at Hodel’s in Bakersfield on May 5. In attendance were Bob Line, Al Sandrini, Dick Schlagel and Bill Black. The gentlemen were featured in a video presentation.
Incoming Region 11 President Lucy VanScyoc led the group as Administrators of the Year were recognized, along with student scholarship recipients, Itzenhauser/Schalgel Award honorees, and the region’s Every Student Succeeding award winner.
Region 11 Administrators of the Year are:
  • Central Office Administrator of the Year: Lauren Mawson, Instructional Services Coordinator for the Panama-Buena Vista Union School District.
  • Curriculum & Instruction Administrator of the Year: Valerie Park, Director of Assessment, Curriculum, & Technology for the Panama Buena Vista Union School District.
  • Elementary Principal of the Year: Natali Garza, Principal of Veva Blunt Elementary School in the Visalia Unified School District.
  • Personnel/Human Resources Administrator of the Year: Cristin Corliss, former Director Human Resources Development for the Visalia Unified School District.
  • Student Services Administrator of the Year: Serena Arias, Equity and Student Services Director for the Visalia Unified School District.
  • Retired Administrator of the Year: Bill Black, Retired Superintendent from Lemoore Union High School District.
  • Special Education Administrator of the Year: Ben Dhillon, Special Education Director for Visalia Unified School District.
  • Superintendent of the Year: Douglas Cardoza, Interim Superintendent for the Visalia Unified School District.
Region 11 established the Itzenhauser/Schlagel Honorarium Lifetime Award to annually honor a new retiree with a lifetime ACSA Membership for not only their service as an educational leader in our region, but also for their commitment to ACSA’s mission to develop and support educational leaders who meet the diverse needs of all California students.
Itzenhauser/Schlagel Award winners are:
  • David Bowling, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction, Wasco Union Elementary School District
  • Blanca Cavazos, Retired Superintendent Taft Union High School District
Every Student Succeeding winner is:
  • Emma Barrera, graduate of Visalia Charter Independent Study, Visalia Unified School District
