Regions 12 and 19 gather for Joint Leadership Conference
ACSA Regions 12 (San Bernardino County) and 19 (Riverside County) held their annual Joint Leadership Conference on June 8-9 at the Westin Rancho Mirage Golf Resort & Spa. Attendees included the respective region executive boards and representatives from the board of each charter in both regions. Incoming region leaders were installed by incoming state ACSA President Rafael Plascencia, who also addressed the attendees about his dedication to education and to the association. ACSA Executive Director Edgar Zazueta was also present and updated attendees on everything ACSA. Incoming presidents of Regions 12 and 19 (Don English and Erika Tejeda, respectively) each welcomed the group and spoke of their goals for the year.
The importance of laughter was not overlooked. A general session after lunch on the first day featured comedian Kay Frances, who had region leaders rolling in the aisles with her humorous take on “Managing the Stress of Change.” Region 12’s Equity Representative and President-elect Cherina Betters, chief of Equity & Access for the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, gave a compelling presentation titled “The Change-Up: Equitable leadership in changing times.”
Region leaders also met with charter job-alikes in breakout meetings to prepare them for their charter leadership roles in the year ahead. The evening ended on a high note, with a casino night featuring dinner and a DJ.
Day two allowed both regions to gather separately for their Leadership Assembly meeting with their 2024-25 delegates and others to plan for the upcoming year.
Regions 12 and 19 thank their sponsors from the Partner4Purpose program, who attended, presented and supported this event in many ways: Edmentum, Right at School, NextGen Math LLC, and FranklinCovey. A special thanks to NextGen Math, LLC, for lending their professional photographer to capture the event.

R5: Classified employee honored at state level
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond recently honored nine outstanding classified school employees for their dedication to California’s public school students.
Sara Sanchez, paraeducator at Green Hills Elementary School, was among the 2024 Classified School Employees of the Year. Sanchez was honored in the Paraprofessional Services category. Sanchez excels in making immediate, nurturing connections with families in the Millbrae community. She understands the importance of building strong relationships with parents and caregivers and actively engages with them to support student success.
Sanchez’s dedication to supporting teachers is superior. She collaborates closely with teachers and staff to enhance classroom learning experiences by providing additional assistance to students, or offering support with classroom management.
“Beyond her professional capabilities, Sara’s kindness and warm demeanor leave a lasting impact on those around her,” said Green Hills Elementary Principal Kerry Dees. “Her genuine smile and supportive nature create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all. Sara has a natural ability to spread positivity and foster connections with individuals and our school community as a whole.”
