The following article was written by Marc Winger, ACSA Council of Retired Leaders president, and Lilibeth Pinpin, ACSA Council of Retired Leaders secretary.
At the ACSA Council of Retired Leaders’ first meeting of the 2025-26 year, ACSA Deputy Executive Director Margarita Cuizon-Armelino provided a data-driven analysis of ACSA members ages 55 and older. The council requested this data as part of their work plan for the 2025-26 year. We want to be sure that soon-to-be retired members are well informed about the benefits and reasons for becoming an ACSA Emeritus Member.
A snapshot of ACSA’s 55-plus membership The data identified significant growth opportunities in retired ACSA membership since there is a large number of 55-plus pre-retirement members. As of Sept. 2, 2025, ACSA has a total of 4,968 members aged 55 and over, divided into two main categories: pre-retirement (3,120) and already retired (1,838). Within the 55-plus population, the larger segment is Regular Members, which is the council’s primary focus for Emeritus membership efforts.
Emeritus membership benefits Why become an Emeritus Member after retirement? Here are a few thoughts from council members:
“I attribute my continued involvement to the concept of servant leadership and feel that this work is a gift, not a job.”
“It’s important for retirees to be represented.”
“ACSA is family and I praise the retiree council for its work on the WEP/GPO issue, and there is still important work to be done.”
Emeritus Members:
  • Continue to receive digital editions of ACSA publications, EdCal and Leadership, as well as knowledge resources and publishing opportunities.
  • Will be notified of all interim administrator positions.
  • May serve on the state Council of Retired Leaders.
  • Continue to participate in ACSA insurance and discount benefits.
In addition, Emeritus Members may receive the following enhanced benefits:
  • A special ACSA-branded item denoting Emeritus status.
  • Free Leadership Summit registration.
Next steps: An invitation to join the Emeritus community The council will be working with management to develop a comprehensive strategy to engage pre-retirement members and encourage them to join the Emeritus community. The plan includes:
  • Creating region-specific retirement materials to address local needs.
  • Developing an Emeritus mentorship program to pair retired members with those approaching retirement.
  • Implementing quarterly retirement readiness webinars.
  • Creating Emeritus-specific benefits and programs.
If you are one of the 55-plus active ACSA members and planning on retiring in the near future, please consider this opportunity. By joining the ACSA Emeritus community, you can continue to be a vital part of the ACSA family. Your experience and knowledge are invaluable, and staying connected allows you to mentor new leaders, advocate for education, and enjoy social activities with your peers.
Don’t wait until the last minute to think about your retirement transition. Explore the benefits of Emeritus membership and stay engaged in a community that values your contributions.
