School meals toolkit available for administrators
March 1, 2021
The following was submitted by No Kid Hungry California.
During this crisis, school meals can be a valuable source of nutrition and comfort for kids, while alleviating stress for parents who have found themselves juggling new responsibilities or struggling to make ends meet.
We know school districts across the state are working hard to provide free meals to anyone under age 18 this year. But, based on No Kid Hungry’s work around the state, we also know that participation in school nutrition programs has dipped significantly during the pandemic, negatively impacting school nutrition budgets and making it harder to sustain strong programs.
To support school districts and raise awareness of these important meal programs, No Kid Hungry has created a marketing toolkit that districts can use to get the word out to families about meals available for kids. The toolkit includes sample letters to families, social media graphics and fliers that districts are welcome to customize and use as they see fit.
No Kid Hungry has also created a texting line and Meals Finder Map with information about how to find meals and access resources like CalFresh. Parents and caregivers can text the word “FOOD” (or “COMIDA”) to 877-877 to find the nearest sites. No Kid Hungry also has English and Spanish PSAs that highlight these resources.
We invite all ACSA members to use these resources to help quickly and easily communicate with the students and families you serve. Thank you for the work you are doing to support California’s kids during these unprecedented times.
