Selfless leaders set a good example for others
From the ACSA President, Linda Kaminski

Throughout history, leadership has been defined in many different ways. Great leaders are known to build an inspiring vision, set direction, and motivate others to follow. Great leaders are most often described with words such as dynamic, encouraging and influential. Great leaders have courage, integrity and passion. This past Presidents’ Day weekend, I spent much time reflecting on leadership and my legacy as a leader. I considered examples of great leadership I have seen throughout my career and in my community. The common thread woven among the most successful, well respected, and influential leaders I have had the privilege of knowing was their ability to put others before themselves and their willingness to act selflessly in their leadership endeavors. As I reflected, I was reminded that some of the most powerful ways these characteristics of great leadership can be shown are through service to others and humility.

The common thread woven among the most successful ... leaders I have had the privilege of knowing was their ability to put others before themselves.
A recent example that came to mind is Joseph Rocha, the outgoing mayor of the city that my school district is in. Mayor Rocha is well known within the city for his long tenure as mayor, for his role as executive officer of the city, and for his advocacy for the residents of the city. More so, Mayor Rocha is known as the mayor who spends his time doing yard work for the elderly, delivering meals to the homebound, jumping rope with children in our schools, and picking up litter in the city’s parks and even the beach at the end of the river that runs through our city. Mayor Rocha’s example has inspired countless residents to follow his lead in being of service to others. He also demonstrates great humility. Recently, I had the opportunity to publicly highlight and thank him for his leadership and support for our schools. In contrast to leaders who overpromise or who boast about their accomplishments, Mayor Rocha draws the attention to those who partner with him and those they jointly serve. As the large audience rose in a spontaneous standing ovation, our mayor’s face shone with humility, gratitude, and a bit of embarrassment! As leaders, we are often called to resolve challenging dilemmas, make tough decisions, and instill confidence in our teams during uncertain times. In the midst of this business of leadership, I hope that we can each pause to remind ourselves that we teach the next generation of leaders through both our words and our actions. The example that is set in action will remain long after the words of the leader have faded. As ACSA president this year, I continue to meet outstanding educational leaders throughout our state. Your commitment to your students, staff and families continues to inspire me and set a powerful example that “Leadership Matters.”
