Simon elected ACSA vice president
May 18, 2020
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the election was held using an online platform, with official ballots being emailed to all eligible voting members of the ACSA Leadership Assembly, which met virtually on May 6 and 7.  The ballot process was overseen and certified by a board of tellers appointed by current president Linda Kaminski, which included region consultants Rob Phillips and Emilie Simmons, as well as nominating committee chair and past-president Holly Edds. Simon was elected on the third ballot. She was one of four ACSA members to run for the office of vice president, which has a direct path to the presidency and helps shape the organization’s direction.  During the Leadership Assembly, ACSA leaders also heard about how ACSA is pivoting to respond to members’ needs during the COVID-19 crisis. For example, ACSA’s Governmental Relations team is in regular communication with the governor’s office, the Superintendent of Public Instruction, and legislative leaders and is being “unapologetic” about securing more funding for schools. ACSA’s Member Services department is emphasizing the value of ACSA membership by sponsoring webinars on distance learning and other vital topics for school leaders.  In her final remarks to the Leadership Assembly as president, Kaminski shared what she anticipated her year would be like. “Like you, I did not anticipate that we would end this year in a virtual Leadership Assembly with schools closed and distance learning the new normal,” she said. “But what I did anticipate and have seen fully realized is the diligence which all of you approached this new situation and met this challenge with dedication, creativity and ongoing commitment to always doing the best for our students.”

The final seat on the ACSA executive board was filled May 7 after Erin M. Simon, Director of Student Support Services at Long Beach Unified School District, was elected as state ACSA vice president for the 2020-2021 year. “I am humbled to be elected for this office,” Simon said. “This is an important position for our organization, now and for the future, and I am honored to have been elected by ACSA leaders.” The new executive board includes incoming President Ron Williams, incoming President-elect Charlie Hoffman, Vice President for Legislative Action Barbara Martinez and incoming Past-president Linda Kaminski. This executive board will officially take office in July. “Next year is filled with opportunities to inform our educational system and support students,” Williams said. “This is the time to ensure that we have transformational leadership in our profession and we are working collaboratively to accomplish our mission of supporting our colleagues and school communities.”
