Garden Grove Unified School District welcomed state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, center, for a visit to Eisenhower Elementary School on May 27 as part of a series of campus visits to observe model practices for safe in-person instruction.
District and school administrators, including Principal Beth Cusimano and Superintendent Gabriela Mafi, provided an overview of the work staff did to bring all students back for in-person instruction all day, five days a week, including personal calls to students and parents, school tours, home visits, and more.

Since reopening in October, there has been no spread of COVID-19 from isolated cases and since April, there have been no cases of COVID-19 among staff or students.

“We know that the best place for students to learn is in the classroom and we were happy to show Superintendent Thurmond the health and safety protocols in place as well as the targeted academic interventions we are providing to address learning loss caused by the pandemic,” said Mafi.

“If we can do it here, it can be done anywhere! With a very diverse demographic and 90 percent of students on free and reduced lunch, we are evidence that a safe and successful return to in-person instruction is possible and we look forward to providing five days of in-person instruction in the fall across all of our 67 campuses.”
