Around 140 new and aspiring principals dedicated themselves to transforming their schools at ACSA’s 2022 Summer Leadership Institute, held June 20-24 at UCLA.
It was the first time in two years that this unique professional development experience was held in person. On the first day, participants were welcomed to the institute by ACSA President Erin Simon. They heard presentations from Tom DeLapp on how school leaders can be a “compass of communication” in their communities; Kevin Taylor (a participant in 2006 and 2012) who spoke about culturally responsive leadership; Jeff Eben with an inspirational message on hope; Mickey Porter on armored vs. daring leadership; and Molly Garcia on the importance of building trust in teams.
Participants were formed into teams to facilitate small group discussions aimed at helping them find ways to implement their new knowledge at their schools. They also had plenty of time for bonding and fun while staying on the UCLA campus.
During a Thursday night barbecue, team leaders and participants enjoyed line dancing from the institute’s resident DJ, Team Leader Schel Brown.
