Summit encourages ‘moving forward’
ACSA’s 2025 Lead With Pride Summit will focus on student-centered advocacy
March 3, 2025
ACSA’s Lead With Pride Summit returns this spring with a focus on inclusivity and support while the federal government continues to encourage the elimination of diversity, equity and inclusion programs.
“Out, Proud and Moving Forward” is the theme of this year’s conference in Anaheim, which will tackle the urgency of equipping educators with the knowledge and tools to address unique challenges facing LGBTQ+ students and staff. Featured sessions include critical conversations with transgender and non-binary students; building LGBTQ+ allyship and advocacy in schools; and strategies to boost morale and foster inclusive learning environments.
Lead With Pride’s keynote speaker for its opening general session is Mason Funk, a historian and activist who has dedicated himself to chronicling the true history of the gay rights movement. His interviews with LGBTQ+ leaders, grassroots activists and others capture the courage of those who have challenged oppression on both personal and political fronts.
Lead With Pride Planning Committee Chair Lester Powell said the conference will provide opportunities for attendees to network with colleagues and interact with students.
“Participants will build valuable connections with like-minded educators and allies, creating a network of ongoing support,” wrote Powell, who is principal of The Tulsa School of Advanced Studies in Los Angeles Unified School District. “A key focus will be student-centered advocacy, helping leaders empower LGBTQ+ students and amplify their voices.”
Powell emphasized the importance of making schools a safe and welcoming space for all students. A study from The Trevor Project found that LGBTQ+ youth are more likely to experience bullying and more likely to attempt suicide. These youth also cite lack of care or affirmation from their families, schools and society as top factors impacting their mental wellness.
“By the end of the summit, attendees will feel inspired, informed and equipped with actionable strategies to drive meaningful change and lead with inclusivity in their school communities,” Powell said.
