It is often said in education that the job is never done. There are always changes to adapt to and evolving needs along the path of continuous improvement for our schools and our students.
But one truth remains constant — every leader eventually steps aside.
So the question becomes: who is ready to lead next?
Experienced leaders have a responsibility to ensure that there is a pipeline of new and capable leaders ready to take their places when they retire.
School and district leaders can help shape the next generation of educational leaders by becoming an ACSA Leadership Coach.
What is ACSA Leadership Coaching? Leadership coaching is a form of individualized, job-embedded professional learning focused on evoking greatness in leaders. It’s about shifting the focus from a problem-solving, “fix it” mentality, to one of leveraging strengths, exploring new possibilities and inspiring reflection and growth.
At its core, coaching is a transformational partnership: one grounded in trust, active listening, and purposeful questioning. Through this process, leaders don’t just solve problem, they evolve how they think, lead, and impact others.
Why are coaches needed? ACSA is expanding its network of diverse, experienced administrators to support the next generation of school leaders through the association’s Clear Administrative Services Credential and Precision Coaching programs. Potential coaches must:
  • Possess a current Clear Administrative Services Credential.
  • Have at least three years of successful administrative experience (principal or higher preferred).
  • Be willing to become an ACSA employee.
  • Participate in ACSA’s online Leadership Coach Training (ALC) while actively coaching.
What’s the process? Whether you are interested in supporting new administrators or seasoned peers, the first step is to complete the Coaching Interest Survey (linked at acsa.org/coaching). This ensures your profile is active and allows ACSA to match your expertise with the right opportunities.
Once a member or candidate in your area requests a coach, ACSA will contact you to discuss a potential match. Once you begin working with a coachee, you will gain access to ACSA Leadership Coach Training. This training, which leads to certification, begins concurrently with your first coaching assignment, ensuring your learning is immediately relevant, practical, and impactful.
Why should I be a coach? School leaders have found being a coach for new administrators offers many rewards, not only for the candidate but also for their own personal growth. ACSA coaches consistently share that the experience expands their own leadership perspective, strengthens communication skills, and connects them to innovative ideas and practices.
Now more than ever, school site leaders can benefit from a confidential thought-partner to help them identify new ways to articulate their vision, build a strong and positive culture, support teaching and learning, and provide every student what they need to thrive.
“Great leadership is measured by what we leave behind,” says ACSA Credentialing and Coaching Services Director Dr. Tamerin Tooker. “Step forward to guide and empower the next generation of school leaders through your experience and insight.”
