The future of educational leadership requires transcendent leaders
New institute facilitated by Think Transcend creates ‘soul-centered’ leaders

The following article was written by Dr. Francisco Escobedo, Dr. Paul Gothold, and Dr. Judy White, directors of the Transcendent Leader Institute.
The role of superintendent has always extended beyond managing systems. At its best, it is about shaping a vision, inspiring people, building cultures of trust, and creating the conditions in which every student can thrive.
The Transcendent Leader Institute, facilitated by Think Transcend in partnership with ACSA, was created with this vision in mind. It is a leadership development experience designed to strengthen not only what educational leaders know, but how they lead, who they are, and the lasting impact they create for students, educators, and communities.
Led by three highly respected former California superintendents, the institute is built on the belief that exceptional leadership begins with alignment — between purpose and action, values and decisions, vision and execution. When leaders develop this alignment, they are better equipped to build organizations that remain focused on what matters most: student success.
This is the foundation of what we describe as “soul-centered leadership.”
Soul-centered leadership recognizes that the most effective leaders lead from a deep understanding of their purpose, values, strengths, and aspirations. It is not about leadership as a position or title, but leadership as a daily practice of intentionality, reflection, courage, and service.
The Transcendent Leader Institute creates space for leaders to engage in that practice while simultaneously developing the strategic capabilities necessary to lead complex educational systems.
Throughout the 10-month experience, participants explore the interconnected dimensions of leadership that drive meaningful systems change. They strengthen their ability to establish a compelling vision, cultivate organizational culture, use evidence to improve outcomes, develop high-performing teams, navigate governance, foster innovation, and lead adaptive change. Rather than treating these as separate competencies, the institute integrates them into a comprehensive leadership framework centered on improving outcomes for every student.
Equally important is the opportunity for leaders to examine themselves as the most influential instrument of change within their organizations. Through structured reflection, executive coaching, peer collaboration, and practical application, participants develop greater self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and resilience — qualities that shape every decision they make and every relationship they build.
For participants, this emphasis on the inner dimensions of leadership has been among the most meaningful aspects of the experience. As one participant reflected, “What makes this institute truly different is its consistent invitation to connect leadership to our most authentic selves.” Another described the experience simply, but powerfully: “I believe this institute is a true life and leadership changer.”
The Transcendent Leader Institute’s approach is firmly grounded in what the science of leadership tells us: Who a leader is shapes what their organization becomes. Research published in the Educational Administration Quarterly found that school leadership has a measurable, significant indirect effect on student outcomes — working through the culture, values, and professional conditions leaders create. This finding echoes Peter Senge’s foundational work on systems thinking, “The Fifth Discipline,” which established that lasting organizational change begins not with restructuring processes, but with shifting the mental models, assumptions, and learning capacity of the people leading them. More recently, advances in the neuroscience of leadership confirm that self-awareness and emotional intelligence — the very capacities the institute cultivates — are neurologically linked to the quality of decision-making under pressure, trust-building, and the leader’s ability to influence complex adaptive systems. Together, this body of evidence affirms what the Transcendent Leader Institute is built upon: Developing the inner life of a leader is not separate from improving outcomes — it is the strategy.
While every participant’s leadership journey is unique, the outcomes are intentionally consistent. Graduates leave the institute with greater clarity of purpose, stronger leadership capacity, practical tools for leading organizational change, and a renewed commitment to student-centered decision making. They return to their districts or organizations prepared to cultivate healthy organizational culture, strengthen leadership teams, engage board and communities with confidence, and build systems that create greater opportunities for students.
By developing leaders who lead with heart, will, and skill, the Transcendent Leader Institute seeks to strengthen not only individual leaders, but the systems they serve and the futures they help shape. Through this work, we believe California can continue building schools where every student has the opportunity to learn, belong, and succeed.
