Their turn
December 6, 2021
Students from Santa Clara County Office of Education had plenty to do during two COVID-19 vaccine clinics held Nov. 7 and Nov. 19 at SCCOE’s offices in Gilroy and San Jose.

The office displayed laminated 11- by 17-inch wall posters with activities and poems to keep the 5- to 11-year-olds occupied — and not thinking about the shot, said Christina Arpante, assistant director of Creative Impact & Public Affairs with Santa Clara County Office of Education.

There were also two canine companions on hand to help calm students who were struggling. During the 15-minute observation period, students found crayons, coloring pages, activity packets, and origami folding squares to keep them busy. According to the California Department of Education, more than 600 school-based COVID vaccine clinics will be held in November and December to target this age group, which became eligible for the vaccine on Nov. 2.
