Thinking about your retirement? So is ACSA
August 5, 2019
Under the leadership of Kathleen McCreery, Gayle Olson and Alice Petrossian, ACSA’s Retirement Committee is being very intentional about its service to current retired educators and the next generation to come. The following are three ways the committee is shaping what your future will look like in retirement:
Challenging the current system to include Social Security benefits for California educators. While many educators worked jobs that allowed them to contribute to Social Security prior to teaching, they are not allowed to collect those benefits if they retire from CalSTRS. Furthermore, spousal benefits are often reduced to zero. This committee aims to change that by meeting with lawmakers and sharing current, real-life stories of educators who have been negatively impacted by this inequity. Creating resources to help the next generation successfully transition into retirement. Are you considering retirement in the next 10 years? If so, the Retirement Committee will be presenting sessions at November’s Leadership Summit that are critical for you. Along with CalSTRS experts, committee members will be providing information on the retirement formula, retirement options, decision timelines and much more. The details provided will help you prepare for a successful retirement. Get a head start, hear the latest information, be prepared.  Finding ways to maintain your purpose after retirement. A Harvard School of Public Health study says we are more likely to maintain our health and slow down aging if we have purpose in our lives as we grow older. Being living proof of this data, the members of the committee are proactively collaborating with the Member Services Department to create meaningful and easy engagement opportunities through ACSA to stay connected to the profession. Details to come. To learn more about the Retirement Committee’s purpose and who to contact, please visit
