Federal advocacy is growing in importance, and California superintendents and school board members are encouraged to join ACSA and the California School Boards Association
for the third Coast2Coast federal advocacy trip, April 8-10 in Washington, D.C.
“The work we do to advocate for public school students extends beyond California’s borders,” said ACSA Executive Director Edgar Zazueta. “We need voices in Washington, D.C., who will inform lawmakers about the importance of delivering services to our students.”
The 2024 Coast2Coast trip will begin with a day and a half of training on education issues specific to California, including insider briefings on the latest politics impacting federal education policy. Participants will take part in special sessions with top influencers and policymakers and have opportunities to network with fellow educators.
The training is followed by an opportunity to advocate directly with congressional representatives and staff on Capitol Hill.
“California is a clear leader in education policy in the United States and what we do in our state shapes what many other states do,” said Parvin Ahmadi, ACSA president and superintendent at Castro Valley Unified School District. “This advocacy trip is focused on having those one-on-one conversations with federal lawmakers who don’t walk in our shoes.”
There is also a pre-conference activity on April 7. The Spies and Lies Tour takes participants along the historic streets of Georgetown guided by a former intelligence officer who will talk about the crucial role residents played in espionage during World War II and the Soviet Era. That is followed by a tour of the International Spy Museum. Space is very limited for this pre-conference event.
Coast2Coast participants are limited to school board members, superintendents, deputy superintendents, directors and cabinet-level positions.
An early-bird registration rate is open till Feb. 22. For more information and registration, visit bit.ly/coast2coast2024.
