ACSA charter member James “Jim” Marinis passed away Sept. 23, 2022 at age 89. Marinis was well-known throughout San Bernardino for his dedication to education and to ACSA Region 12, which he served in many capacities for nearly 50 years.
Marinis was born in Minnesota and moved with his family to Iowa, where he completed high school. He served in the Navy before returning to pursue his teaching certification at Iowa State Teachers’ College. He taught in Iowa and at Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico before accepting a teaching position in San Bernardino in 1962. He became a vice principal and then a principal and went on to serve the San Bernardino City USD community for 30 years at various schools.
Following his retirement from school administration in 1993, he ran and was elected to two terms on the San Bernardino City USD Board of Education.
A supporter of ACSA since 1971, Marinis held many positions on the Region 12 Board of Directors, including the office of president during 1980-81. He also served on the SASS committee for nine years, and on the region’s Retired Educational Managers charter for three years. He was also the Region 12 Consultant for 10 years. At age 85, Marinis decided to retire from ACSA service, having served Region 12 in one capacity or another every year since its inception.
“Money was tight when ACSA first formed, and Region 12 was uncertain how much funding would be provided by the state association,” Marinis recalled during an interview upon his retirement. “Our first meetings were held at a local high school where our ‘dinner’ consisted of peanuts and popcorn.”
Jim Marinis was selected as Region 12’s Retired Administrator of the Year in 2014 and received the region’s Wilson Grace Award in 2018-19.
Marinis is survived by his wife Margaret, who supported him in all of his professional activities and often attended events with him.
