The following personnel changes were approved by the Carlsbad Unified School District Board of Trustees in advance of the 2022-23 school year. Superintendent Ben Churchill is pleased to welcome the following administrators to their new roles: Megan Arias was appointed to the position of Director of Certificated Personnel Services. Arias has served in a variety of capacities in CUSD for the past 12 years, serving as the Director of Secondary Education since 2014, and as the Principal and Assistant Principal of Aviara Oaks Middle School. Bryan Brockett was appointed to the position of Director of Secondary Education. Brockett served as Principal at Carlsbad High School beginning in January 2018; before that, he was the Principal at Aviara Oaks Middle School and an Assistant Principal at Valley Middle School. In 2021, Brockett was recognized by the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce as the Administrator of the Year. Robert Allen was appointed to the position of Director of Assessment and Technology. Allen served as the district’s Technology TOSA for five years, before returning to the classroom as a teacher at Carlsbad Seaside Academy. In 2017, he received the Inspire Award for Innovative Classrooms from the Classroom of the Future Foundation. Julie Redfield was appointed to the position of Principal at Carlsbad High School. Redfield has been the Assistant Principal at CHS since 2012; she also served as the Interim Principal at CHS in the fall of 2017. In 2019, Redfield was recognized as the Co-Administrator of the Year by ACSA for San Diego and Imperial Counties. Ethan Williams was appointed to the position of Assistant Principal at Carlsbad High School. Williams comes to CUSD after five years of distinguished service at Claremont High School in the San Diego Unified School District where he is currently in his third year as Principal, and previously served for two years as Assistant Principal. Marisa Leong was appointed to the position of Assistant Principal at Calavera Hills Middle School where she has been serving as a Teacher on Special Assignment for the past three years. Melissa Barry was appointed to the position of Assistant Principal at Aviara Oaks Middle School. Barry most recently taught 10th grade English at Sage Creek High School.
ACSA Executive Director Edgar Zazueta has announced that Margarita Cuizon-Armelino has been promoted to the position of Deputy Executive Director for ACSA. In her new capacity, Cuizon-Armelino will retain oversight of ACSA’s Member Services division but will assume several new duties to support the association and the Executive Director. Some of her responsibilities will include:
  • Working with ACSA leadership to monitor and communicate progress towards organizational goals.
  • Focusing on initiatives related to fostering a positive organizational culture for ACSA employees.
  • Helping to identify and solve core organizational challenges.
  • Providing support and oversight for special projects and initiatives.
  • Assisting in responding to inquiries on behalf of the Executive Director and representing the association.
Cuizon-Armelino has provided more than 30 years of service to ACSA and its members. She spent four years in the Educational Services Department before joining the new Member Services Department as administrative assistant. She was promoted to membership marketing manager before being promoted to the role of Senior Director of Member Services in 2014.
